| Hook |
3xl - 4xl nymph |
| Thread |
6/0 black |
| Body |
medium mylar |
| Underwing |
yellow calftail |
| Wing |
mallard flank |
| Hackle |
1 brown
1 grizzly |
 |
Start the thread at the bend and wrap a
thread base as you move towards the eye. Stop the thread
approximately 1/4" behind the eye. |
 |
Tie in a 5" piece of medium mylar
tinsel. If you want the silver side to show, then place the
silver side of the tinsel against the hook. Coat the
thread with a thin coat of head cement. |
 |
Wind the tinsel away from you, over the
top of the shank. The wraps should be close together but not
overlapping. Remember, keep tension on the tinsel. |
 |
When you reach the bend, wrap the
tinsel back towards the eye. Keep moderate tension on the
tinsel and keep the wraps close together. |
 |
When the tinsel is back to the tie in
point, hold the tinsel below the hook shank with your right hand
and pass the bobbin over the shank 3 times to secure the
tinsel. Trim the excess tinsel. |
 |
Tie in a small bunch of yellow calftail
for the underwing at the tie in point. The wing should
extend to the bend of the hook. Trim the butts of the
calftail. |
 |
Place one mallard flank feather on each
side of the hook, one at a time and secure the stem with 3 secure
wraps of thread. Trim the excess stems and cover with
thread. |
 |
Select 1 grizzly and 1 brown dry fly
hackle (good saddle hackle). Tie them in by the bare stem
with the shiny side of the feathers facing you. These are
both tied in at the original tie in point. |
 |
Grasp one feather by the tip and
"cock" it over the eye of the hook and then wrap it
around the shank going over the top away from you. 3 wraps
should get you to the eye. Secure with 2 tight thread
wraps. Then wrap the other hackle through the first and tie
off. |
 |
Form a small thread head and use 3 half
hitches or a whip finish to finish the fly. Add 1 small drop
of head cement to the head. You are finished. |
