Wooly Bugger Tying Instructions

Recipe

Hook 4xl - 6xl
streamer
Thread 6/0 black
Tail black marabou
Body black chenille
Hackle grizzly saddle
Start the thread behind the eye and  wrap a thread base as you move towards the bend. Stop the thread at the back of the shank (flat portion before bend).
Using the pinch method, tie in 1 marabou feather at the thread location.  Secure with 4 tight thread wraps.  Lift the butt section of the feather and wind the thread to 1/8" behind the eye.  Use "traveling wraps" (spaced out wraps with tension) to advance the thread.
Twist the butt of the marabou feather and lay on top of hook shank.  Hold with right hand and pass the bobbin over the shank 3 times.  Then secure with 2 tight thread wraps in the same spot.  Trim the excess marabou.
Tie in a grizzly saddle hackle by the tip at the read tie in point using 2 tight thread wraps.  Then advance the thread using "traveling wraps" to a point 1/8" behind the eye.
Tie in a 5" piece of black chenille using the pinch method.  Secure with 3 tight thread wraps.  Trim any excess over the eye.
Hold the chenille on your side of the hook, parallel to the shank and bind down as you wind the thread to the rear tie in point.
Wrap the thread back towards the eye, binding down the chenille.  Apply some head cement to the body.
Wind the chenille away from you, over the top of the shank.  The wraps should be close together but not overlapping as you wrap towards the eye.  Remember to keep tension on the chenille.
When you reach the 1/8" behind the eye, hold the chenille out over the eye and pass the bobbin over the shank 3 or 4 times to secure the chenille.  Clip the excess chenille, form a small thread head and half hitch or whip finish.  Apply cement to the head.
Holding the saddle hackle by the butt, palmer the hackle over the chenille body by spacing it as you wrap.  Use moderate tension to sink the stem into the chenille.
Hold the hackle over the eye of the hook at a 45 degree angle and pass the bobbin over the shank 3 times to secure the hackle.  Then use 3 tight thread wraps in the same location.  Trim the excess saddle hackle.
Form a small thread head and use 3 half hitches or a whip finish to finish the fly.  Put some head cement on the thread head.
